Catalyst Participates in Diversity in Design Program
In 2022, MillerKnoll, in collaboration with IA-Interior Architects and Catalyst, launched the Diversity-In-Design initiative aiming to foster inclusivity and diversity in the design field.
This effort sought to expose students from diverse backgrounds to interior architecture and design, shedding much-needed light on the many career opportunities in the industry.
In partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of King County's YouthForce program, 2023’s cohort of middle and high school students were introduced to interior design and architecture, as well as furniture design concepts and careers. Throughout six sessions led by design professionals at MillerKnoll, IA, and Catalyst, various aspects of the design world were covered with plenty of engagement from the teens.
Activities included site visits like Climate Pledge Arena, design exercises, and projects like creating floor plans, designing storefronts, and envisioning future youth centers. The students also explored virtual reality, furniture design, and attended career readiness workshops as part of the Seattle Diversity in Design (SDID) program. Some amazing designs were created, and we couldn’t be more proud of this year’s group.
A graduation ceremony celebrated their achievements, with proud parents and friends cheering the students on. We can’t wait to participate in the Diversity-In-Design program again in 2024!
